INTRODUCING ANDREW CHAPMAN

This is my first professional work using a game engine. This project uses Unity 3D to create a simulation of our warehouse. This simulation will be used for early training and familiarisation before operators move onto the shop floor. This project is my current project and is the project I am most proud of in my career to date. Working on a team of 2 with myself programming and designing elements for this simulator and another person creating all the 3D assets and animations, I have had a number of unique hurdles to overcome regarding this project. The largest limitation is performance as the simulation is using projection once on each wall and the floor. This leads to a large amount of draw calls being used creating a bottleneck as the CPU was waiting for draw calls to finish. We have made a large amount of steps to reduce the impact of this and we continue to work towards this.

This is easily the weirdest project I have to showcase. We set out to create a game that played itself. Instead it eventually became a showcase of the models we created throughout the project. Play it here: https://spudward.itch.io/wizards-tower-2-electic-boogaloo For this project, we had been working in a team of 3, all of us creating 3D assets for this and myself and another programmer working on the codebase for this project. An issue we had handled for this was finding an efficient way of having the player walk through the room while seeing all of the models in the room. To work around this, we used a set path that went around the outside of the room, with a camera controller that automatically looks to the nearest point of interest as you are passing them. We also wanted to make the rooms you were travelling in feel like they are organically filled while still being different each time. To do this we broke the room down into different aspects, there would always be a a center piece at the beginning of the first room. We then create objects that decorate the walls that can have random clutter or trinkets on them.

Sector Defense is the largest scope game I have worked on to date. This was a 3 month long project with a team of 8 people. We created a twin stick shooter with an endless mode that you can see footage of below. I was the sole programmer on this project and all of the code is my own. Rope McSwing 3D is a first person platforming game that I created on my own. This game features multiple weapons that each have different functions within the game. This is the game I created for the most recent Global Game Jam. This time I had a smaller group of just 2 people to work with. We were both programmers with a little bit of experience with 3d modelling. We created a diablo style dungeon crawler with some abilities for the players to use. This was the second Global Game Jam I participated in in my time at University. For this one, we agreed to livestream the event for the university, keeping the stream running throughout the entire game jam. Since people on the team were a bit more confident this year, we got a bit more experimental with what we decided to put into the game which makes for an interesting experience. This is the largest team I have worked with to date. It was the first Global Game Jam I had entered in University. Due to my prior experience, people looked to me for guidence for this project as most of the people had only been programming for a couple of months. Because of this, I took the position of team leader as well as taking on a lot of programming tasks. The larger team size also came with its own drama within the group. Looking back there are some things I wish I had done differently on this project however I am still proud of what we produced on that weekend.
